By Catherine White Guide To Design Trends For 2023From romantic, moody hues to painted ceilings, 2023 is already ushering in new trends for the homescape. Read below for a guide to what design trends industry experts expect to see more of in 2023, and how you can spice up your home by adopting just a few of these old and new ideas. Trends We’re Waving Goodbye To In 2023MinimalismAll of us simple, money-savers have enjoyed the minimalistic trend that’s swept home design these past few years. Less knick-knacks, less on the walls, less on your bookshelves offered a nice, clean look. This meant less clutter, which helped lower cortisol levels, calming the nervous system. While too much to look at might lead to overstimulation, there’s a shift towards more of a balanced approach that’s less bare bones and more color, variety, and originality. The endless layering, decorating a home from top to bottom to showcase beauty and all the things you love, is giving way to balance. We’re not arguing against colors, accessories, plants, and layers. However, there’s an appeal to a mix of neutral colors and statement colors, maximized spaces and empty spaces. We recommend creating moments within your home that pop, while maintaining a neutral base that’ll last for some time. People built their dream homes despite the context that surrounded them. This year, we’re already seeing people move more towards homes that fit the environment, with natural materials and elements from outdoors moving into the home. Bamboo, for example, may be a great coastal option, however, the material may not fit a snowy cabin in Colorado. Try incorporating natural materials and design that complements your region and is practical, bringing heat in or keeping it out Photo Credits: @masterpiece_custom_builders303 Rattan Rattan Wherever You AreRemember the boho look that took social media by storm? There was quite the overplay on rattan daybeds, coffee tables, side tables, bookshelves, etc. Influencers and social media design accounts went overboard, making this beautiful, natural material fall out of trend more quickly. While we don’t think rattan will ever really totally go out of style since it’s a natural material, we do recommend using it in small doses. Choose your favorite rattan furniture piece like an accent chair or incorporate it in your back patio for a fun, playful splash. It provide the opportunity for individuals to add some flair and personality to their space. However those same accent walls created a choppy look that left room feeling incomplete. This year is all about adding personality with cohesive biophilic colors that coincide with the environment. Drenching rooms with colors from the ceiling all the way down to the baseboards. Think bold paintings, nostalgic heirlooms, glitzy decor, unique foliage, and rich colors. If you love the art deco look but want to start small, try finding a few vases or frames that match the vibe, switch out your throw blankets and pillows, or replace your kitchen table’s centerpiece for something more glamorous and flashy than before. Gothic is less about the skeleton, Halloween decor and more of a Baroque Era design that incorporates dark, rich atmospheres with beautiful goblets, pendant lights, and heavier accents. Use your living room to showcase your own originality through surprising textures (think leather mixed with wood), arched candlesticks, stacked mirrors, golden pig bookends, or an abstract statue. Use area rugs, funky coffee tables, and a vintage vinyl record player to add a touch of playfulness and character within your living space Photo Credits: RemedyED Softening Sharp Lines With Arches & CurvesArches and round shapes add a unique element to your home that’s not used in standard home design. It offers a playful, elegant effect while breaking up the monotony of sharp lines and edges. They can help define rooms, draw attention to the height of your walls, and even serve as a vignette etched into your wall, displaying your favorite artwork. Vintage furniture and accents are making their way into 2023 design trends, blending heirloom vibes with modern elements. Think antique furniture pieces, worn books, pastel, faded color palettes, and cozy accessories. Photo Credits: @the_colorful_colonial Radiant Light FixturesLights are the jewelry of the home. Lighting affects the ambiance of your home, setting the tone of the day and night, which is why you need beautiful, functional light fixtures accompanied by natural light. We recommend pendant lights, funky flush mounts, trendy chandeliers, track lighting, and sconces to your home. Don’t forget to add mounted lights above artwork or dimmers on any bigger light fixtures. Photo Credit: Lelani Badenhorst Statement WallpaperGet creative with wallpaper! Wallpaper adds texture to a room and a pop of personality where it might be missing. Incorporate some of your favorite patterns in your powder bathroom, vignettes, entryway ceiling, nitches, or even behind bookshelves. We recommend painting an accent ceiling, only make sure this is a place where it’s trimmed off so the ceiling can be framed well. Greens, blues, tans, and beige are all colors that make you think of nature, land, and the sea. These offer serenity, similar to spa, and are easy to mix and match. Plus, these never fall out of style or become dated thanks to their flexibility and versatile nature. Indoor gardening is not only beautiful, it’s also incredibly healthy for your home. Plants help oxidize and keep your air clean while reducing toxins. We recommend combining foliage of all different shapes and sizes to your space, playing with heights and growing habits, like whether they climb upwards or grow outwards. Photo Credits: Unsplash Supporting Your Local CommunityThe pandemic also helped shift consumers towards support of local artists and small businesses within their areas. Not only is this more environmentally friendly than products that are mass-produced, but they also are a great way of showcasing originality within your home. Local and handmade is also great for customized items, like letters for your newborn’s nursery or a painting for your entryway. Plus, you can save on shipping for those larger furniture pieces! Photo Credit: @loveinpottery SustainabilityWe always encourage doing your research and discovering what companies practice sustainability. It’s more and more common to find products that are made from recycled materials or fabrics that are dyed from natural pigments. By supporting these businesses, you’re helping the environment and showing off the functionality and practicality of sustainable products. This is a trend we expect to see for the long haul (and rightfully so). Photo Credits: @yellowtrace Well, there you have it. The 2023 design guide for your home.
